Blood Safety Best Rated in Country
Four licensed blood banks are functioning in Chandigarh, three in major government hospitals and one is being run by a voluntary agency. All the blood banks are covered under modernization scheme of National AIDS Control Organization, New Delhi and receive grants for consumables, human resource, capacity building, equipment maintenance. Component separation is presently being done in three blood banks and efforts are being made towards upgradation. All the blood banks are carrying out 100% mandatory testing of blood units for HIV, Hepatitis-B, Hepatitis-C, VDRL and malaria before releasing them for transfusion.

Blood Bank, PGIMER also functions as Model Blood Bank and Regional Blood Transfusion Centre, thereby, providing technical assistance and help to the blood banks of the of the entire region as and when necessary.

Voluntary blood donation in Chandigarh is 90% and is rated best in the country. National Voluntary Blood Donation Day (October 1st) , World Blood Donors Day (June 14) and National Youth Day (12 January) are observed every year.

State Blood Transfusion Council has been working actively to encourage voluntary blood donation. 50% of the grant is given by NACO and matching grant is released by the state Government. The following are the four blood banks:-
